Gratitude Letters for Nurses at Stanford Tri - Valley
Patients aren't the only ones impacted by cancer. Nurses and healthcare providers often carry a tremendous emotional burden as they care for individuals and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Day after day, they witness pain, uncertainty, and loss, all while working long, demanding shifts and striving to provide the best possible care. Their compassion, strength, and resilience are essential to every patient’s journey, yet their own emotional well-being is often overlooked.
To brighten their Thanksgiving holiday and remind them how deeply appreciated they are, Mind Over Cancer Initiative volunteers came together to write 100 heartfelt letters of gratitude for nurses at their local hospital. Each letter was crafted with intention, acknowledging the dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment that healthcare workers bring to their roles. These notes served as small but meaningful gestures to uplift their spirits and let them know that their hard work does not go unnoticed.
At the Mind Over Cancer Initiative, we are committed to spreading kindness and support to everyone affected by cancer — not only the patients, but also the caregivers, providers, and loved ones who walk alongside them. Through actions big and small, we aim to create a community of compassion, gratitude, and healing.
Cancer Support Center Mental Health Toolkits 10/19
Our volunteers created 50 thoughtfully curated mental health toolkits for adult patients at the UCSF Cancer Patient & Family Support Center, with the goal of promoting well-being and bringing moments of comfort to those impacted by cancer. Each toolkit was assembled with care and intention: a journal and pen were included to encourage gratitude, reflection, and mindfulness practice; a cozy beanie was added to offer warmth and a tangible reminder that the recipients are supported; and every kit featured a hand-written letter of encouragement to provide emotional uplift during challenging times.
To add a touch of creativity and joy, volunteers also painted small, colorful rocks designed to bring a smile to the faces of the patients who received them. Altogether, the toolkits served as a heartfelt gesture of compassion, hope, and solidarity.
Letter-Writing with Girls Love Mail 7/13
Our incredible MOCI members came together to write 80 beautifully handwritten letters filled with words of encouragement, hope, and support for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. These heartfelt messages were delivered to cancer centers and hospitals across the U.S. through our partnership with Girls Love Mail, a wonderful organization dedicated to uplifting cancer patients through personal letters.
Each note was crafted with care and compassion, offering a beacon of comfort during a challenging time. We are beyond grateful to our dedicated volunteers and board members whose kindness and effort made this initiative a meaningful success. Together, we made a difference — one letter at a time.

Our 1st Youth Connection Seminar
Empathy is crucial when it comes to understanding cancer and all medical conditions. It shapes how we support others, how we listen, and how we build meaningful connections with those who are struggling. Our Cancer Connection Seminar created a safe and supportive space for teens to open up about their own experiences, allowing them to share personal stories about how cancer and other diseases have touched their lives. Through guided discussions and activities, participants explored healthy ways to cope with stigma, stress, and emotional challenges, while also learning how to be compassionate allies to people impacted by cancer. The seminar not only strengthened their emotional awareness, but also empowered them with tools to offer support, understanding, and kindness within their communities.
Pediatric Care Package Drive May 18th
Nine dedicated members of the Mind Over Cancer Initiative joined forces to assemble 41 wellness care packages for pediatric patients at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. Each thoughtfully curated package was filled with stress-relief items like coloring books, art supplies, Play-Doh, card games, stickers, bracelets, and even board games — all designed to bring moments of joy, creativity, and relaxation to children facing serious illnesses, including cancer.
We’re so proud of our volunteers for their compassion and commitment to brightening these young patients’ days. Every package delivered was a small but meaningful reminder that they’re not alone in their fight.
